The QCSA has bestowed Life Membership on Judy Harris and Brian Fitzgerald.

Judy started with Toombul DCC Second Grade in 1971, and graduated to First Grade in 1977 when the First Grade scorer moved on.

​

She was appointed to her first First Class match in 1986 after the then QCA Secretary noticed that she could paper score, keep the ball by ball sheets, do wagon wheels and knit. He reckoned if she could do all that, she could handle First Class.

​

Judy then spent nearly 30 years as one of the leading scorers in Queensland. Although her First Class career chiefly centred on international and domestic matches at the Gabba, she also went to Kuala Lumpur as Australian scorer for Super 8 matches, and has scored at Caloundra, Mackay, Toowoomba, Cairns, Bundaberg and Darwin.

Judy also did some ‘moonlighting’ with Channel 9 for a few years when Max Kruger was on other duties, and as a result has scored in every capital city in Australia (albeit for TV in some cases).

​

Judy finally hung up the pencil for Toombul at Christmas 2013, and for Australia and Queensland in January 2014, having scored over 500 First Class matches, including 31 Tests, 102 domestic one day matches, 63 ODIs and 140 Sheffield Shield matches.

​

Judy was a founding member of the Queensland Cricket Scorers Association, and has provided the QCSA with sure guidance ever since, whether holding an official executive position or not. She has provided a vital conduit for the QCSA to Queensland Cricket, enabling us to maintain a mutually productive relationship with that body.

​

Judy’s retirement leaves a big hole in the Queensland scoring ranks, and her experience, guidance, approachability, friendship and knitting will be sorely missed.

Brian has been University's First Grade scorer since1978 (with a hiatus from 1983 to 1993 while he lived in Cairns), and started his First Class scoring career in 1995.

​

Brian has scored more than 340 First Class men's, women's & junior matches.  All would agree that computer scoring is not for Brian, but his neat, accurate scoresheets are a credit to him. Many scorers could learn a lot from the way he compiled and completed a scoresheet. He is a passionate supporter of Queensland and Australian cricket — a loss by Queensland or Australia strikes into his heart.

Brian’s cricket knowledge is second to none. His research on players ensured he always came fully prepared to any match, equipped with knowledge of impending milestones. He was outstanding in his ability to recognise incoming batsmen, change of bowlers and catchers, no matter whether they were players from another state or another country. At the time of his retirement from all levels of scoring at the end of the 2013–14 season, the similarly retiring Queensland scorer said, ‘Brian is easily the best scorer in the country’ — a fine tribute from someone who would know.

He steadfastly refused any remuneration from University despite the time and travel involved in his commitment not only as scorer, but also as training coordinator for some years.

​

Brian was a founding member of the Queensland Cricket Scorers Association, and is well respected by his colleagues and the players who have benefited from his commitment over many years. 

​

Brian has never sought acknowledgement for his services and, indeed, is very embarrassed if his work IS recognised — but he will have to swallow his embarrassment just this once to receive this deserved accolade from his peers.
